How Will You Stop Diabetes?

The future of diabetes is in your hands – this is the message that the American Diabetes Association will be sharing next month amidst news that the number of diabetes cases could double, even triple, by 2050.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released an analysis in the journal Population Health Metrics today with estimates that have painted a grim picture of what current health trends are and what can be expected as long as they continue:

  • One in 10 U.S. adults lives with diabetes now (about 23.6 million)
  • Nearly six million don’t know they have diabetes, and nearly 57 million have prediabetes
  • By 2030, U.S. medical costs for diabetes cases are expected to double
  • By 2050, one in three U.S. adults could have diabetes

The rapid rise in diabetes cases projected over the next 40 years is based largely on an ever-growing obese and aging population, and an increase in the populations of minority groups in the U.S. who are at higher risk for diabetes.

There are also two positive reasons for the increase in cases: earlier diagnosis of diabetes, and improved blood sugar monitoring as well as treatments that allow people with diabetes to live longer.

The CDC’s projections come just days before November, American Diabetes Month, a time for spreading the word about the seriousness of diabetes and  the prevention and control of diabetes. The month is sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, which also launched the national Stop Diabetes movement in 2009.

This year the American Diabetes Association announced they will be asking the nation the question: How will you Stop Diabetes? The future is in your hands.

Diabetes is a disease that can be stopped, according to the association. People with or without prediabetes can reduce risk of the development of type 2 diabetes through weight management, physical fitness, and making healthy food choices.
